Heelhooks is the duo of Rob Shields (Sunplus) and Hans Lo (Unk, Bootleg Bourdain). Following from the debut EP Oh Man What A Dream in 2022, the London-based duo continues to explore their unique blend of broken dance rhythms and twisted sampling, all recorded live and without overdubs. Recorded at Studio 58 in Tottenham, sessions took the group’s direction towards something more spacious and calming, with a focus on minimalist, raga-like pieces.
Losing Loved Ones To Astrology comprises eight improvised pieces selected from over two hours of recordings using modular synths and laptop processing. The pallet of sounds are sourced from unreleased productions, 80s horror films and Hong Kong pop songs. The album is a series of abstract collages, riding the line between ambience and dissonance, calming and unsettling. Mimicking the thought processes that occur during hypnagogic states, the group achieves unexpected results through a process of chance. The outcome is both bizarre and familiar, conjuring otherworldly states—fever dreams, mystic experiences, occult rituals and virtual reality.
While the album’s title track channels the dub-techno experiments of Vladislav Delay, songs like “Blind Summit” and “Cruel In The Pool”’ evoke densely layered swamp-like textures in the form of broken rhythms; “Dream In Ultramarine” and “Let’s Rest Here, Just for a Bit” offer a soothing relief from the chaos. Tal Janes, who assisted on the recording, also provided real-time, dub-like FX such as spring reverbs and tape echo, lending a cavernous character to the sound.
The album cover was designed by Luke Harby, presenting an off-kilter setting that reflects the absurdity of the music.
